Our journey from inception to innovation in VFD technology
The Birth of SmartD Technologies
SmartD Technologies Inc. is significantly transforming motor control technologies, specifically Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). The company’s inception began six years ago when Simon Leblond, the company’s CEO, an experienced startup entrepreneur new to the world of VFDs, teamed up with three engineers, Simon Caron, Jean-Marc Legrand and Jonathan Brodeur. Their journey deviated from conventional startup advice they initiated their venture not with a problem to solve but with a focus on a cutting-edge technology—wide-band gap semiconductors, particularly Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC). These materials promised remarkable improvements in power electronics due to their higher switching speeds and reduced losses compared to traditional semiconductors.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Our Path
Initially, SmartD’s founders explored various applications for GaN and SiC, including electrical protection devices like solid-state breakers. They engaged in extensive market research, consulting with panel builders and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). However, they soon realized that the cost of integrating Silicon Carbide into purely protective devices did not offer sufficient value.
Revolutionizing VFDs with Advanced Semiconductors
The turning point came when the team identified motor control as a field where their technology could add substantial value. While exploring VFDs, they discovered the bulky filters used to mitigate the side effects of conventional VFDs. One of the co-founders, Simon Caron, proposed miniaturizing these filters by leveraging the higher switching frequencies enabled by SiC. This idea was the turning point, leading the team to focus on revolutionizing VFDs.
From Concept to Market-Ready Product
Developing a VFD, however, posed significant challenges due to its complexity, involving high-speed power electronics, Internet of Things (IoT) integration, and cybersecurity. The SmartD team had to redesign control algorithms, develop a new software stack from scratch, and ensure their technology was future-proof. They opted for modern architectures and open-source programming languages, which allowed them to innovate freely without the constraints that larger, more established companies might face.
Scaling Up and Expanding Our Team
Their relentless efforts bore fruit, progressing from a proof of concept to a fully functional product. SmartD’s VFD technology, characterized by low harmonic and filterless sinewaves, began to resonate with customers. This success spurred rapid growth, expanding the team from four to over forty employees and continuously scaling their operations. Their facility in Montreal, Quebec, strategically located near research partners École de technologie supérieure (ETS) and Concordia University, symbolizes their innovative spirit and commitment to growth..
Securing Investments and Building Partnerships
SmartD’s recently secured $14.2 million in funding from notable investors such as Investissement Québec, Hammond Power Solutions, SE Ventures, and Boreal Ventures. This financial backing underscores the confidence investors have in SmartD’s vision and potential. Additionally, SmartD has established a robust distribution network in Canada and the US, partnering with distributors who have in-house automation specialists. This approach ensures that customers receive expert support and facilitates scaling the business.
