What is this role about?
Senior Hardware Design Engineer

About SmartD Technologies

Founded in 2018, SmartD is seeking to disrupt the established century-old industry of electrical motor control. We are a Series A-funded team of innovators based in downtown Montreal, scaling a product that will save energy and be used by millions.

With strategic partners on board and a clear vision, we are focused on execution and bringing real value to our customers. If you are an expert in power and control electronics design, passionate about high-efficiency motor control and wide-bandgap semiconductors, and want to work with a small, dedicated, and effective team, we invite you to join our mission.

The Impact of This Role

At SmartD, we value individual initiative and technical execution. In this position, you will:

  • Drive Disruption: Directly contribute to the design and development of our next-generation motor control technology, bridging high-speed control logic and high-power conversion.
  • Enable Sustainability: Play a key role in building a product that significantly reduces global industrial energy consumption.
  • Lead Technical Outcomes: Take ownership of end-to-end hardware development — from conceptual architecture through verification, certification, and volume manufacturing — seeing your work go from the lab to a finished product used in the real world.

What You’ll Own

  • Electronic Design: Develop and refine schematics and PCB layouts across both control electronics (MCUs, FPGAs, signal conditioning) and power electronics (inverters, converters, gate drivers, thermal management).
  • Design Reviews: Lead cross-functional design reviews to ensure technical integrity, cost-effectiveness, and specification compliance.
  • Verification & Validation: Author comprehensive test plans and execute hardware verification to ensure reliability under extreme operating conditions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Drive the technical documentation and testing required for UL, CE, and TÜV certifications.
  • Design for Excellence: Perform DFMEA to identify and mitigate risks early in the design cycle.
  • Manufacturing Optimization: Partner with our contract manufacturers to optimize designs for high-volume production — yield improvement, component sourcing strategy, and cost structure.

What You Bring

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Proven track record with MOSFET/IGBT switching, magnetics design, and high-speed digital routing for MCUs and MPUs
    • Hands-on design experience with wide-bandgap semiconductors (GaN or SiC) — required
    • Controller board electronic design experience — required
    • Proficiency in DFMEA and Worst-Case Analysis (WCA)
    • Direct experience navigating UL, IEC/EN standards, and EMC/EMI mitigation
    • Mastery of Altium Designer; SPICE simulation proficiency
  • Experience: 5 to 10 years in hardware development with a focus on power and control systems — required
  • Language: Professional English is required for international collaboration; French is an asset for our Montreal-based operations.
  • Mindset: A problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and values collaborative innovation.
  • Nice to have: Knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508, IEC 61800); experience interfacing with global manufacturing partners and regulatory bodies.

Benefits & Work Environment

  • Health & Security: Comprehensive coverage including Extended Health Care, Disability Insurance, and Life Insurance.
  • Time Off: 4 weeks of paid vacation (PTO) from day one.
  • Flexibility: A hybrid work environment with a focus on results.
  • The Lab Advantage: We spend the majority of our time on-site at our 425 rue Guy We believe hardware is a team sport; being near the lab and our colleagues fosters the real-time “aha!” moments that drive our technology.
  • Commute: Conveniently located a 10-minute walk from Lucien-L’Allier (Orange line) and with immediate access to bus lines 35, 36, and 71.

Our Hiring Process

We respect your time and maintain a transparent, 3-step process:

  1. Introductory Call (20 min): A general discussion via Google Meet to align on interest and fit.
  2. Technical Discussion (30 min): A technical deep-dive with the Department Head via Google Meet.
  3. On-Site Interview (1 hour): An in-depth technical meeting with your future colleagues and a tour of our lab.
